Job Information

  • Description:

UCSF Public Affairs (PA), a part of UCSF University Relations (UR), is dedicated to communicating UCSF’s excellence in patient care, research and education, primarily through the traditional and evolving news media. PA also leads strategic communications to both internal and external audiences about sensitive issues related to the operations of a major health sciences enterprise.

We seek a seasoned communicator to join our team as a Senior Public Information Representative (SPIR), with a particular focus on health sciences communications -- including research discoveries, industry partnerships, NIH funding and other institutional priorities -- and crisis management.

The SPIR communicates through a variety of means (news releases, web stories, fact sheets, media pitches, talking points, ghost-written opinion pieces, etc.) that require translating UCSF institutional issues and scientific discoveries and partnerships into language for the lay public. Working with UR’s Digital Communications team, the SPIR also communicates through social media (e.g., video, podcasts, infographics and engagement forums including Twitter).

The SPIR will have a signifcant role in crisis management. This will involve communicating about sensitive internal and external issues, including real estate transactions and the development of UCSF’s campus in San Francisco’s urban environment, labor, animal research, among others. This position will work closely with UR’s Community and Government Relations team, based in San Francisco and Washington, DC. The position also will work with UR’s Brand Communications team to ensure proper use of UCSF’s name in media communications by industry partners and business affiliates.

The SPIR, along with the rest of the PA team, provides media trainings for faculty and leadership, provides counsel to faculty on sensitive issues and prepares them for media interviews. This SPIR may serve as a backup editor for UCSF news releases.

PA participates in University Relation’s emergency communications preparations for potential events, such as earthquakes.

PA includes a team of SPIRs focused on the clinical enterprise, UCSF Health, and a team focused on the campus’s research and education missions. This SPIR will focus on the campus enterprise and report to the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Public Affairs.

It also is a fun, dynamic place to work, made up of bright, talented, motivated colleagues who bring a variety of communications skills to their roles and provide significant support to one another – i.e., we function as a team. We seek another strong communicator to join our efforts.
