Q&A with Foggies Small Agency & Campaign of the Year Winner, Landis Communications

This year, we're taking you deeper inside our chapter award program, The Foggies, to learn more about the winners – what makes them tick, how their winning entry came about, how much work went into it, and more. Next up, please meet 2019 Small Agency of the Year & Campaign of the Year winner, Landis Communications. We sat down with President/CEO, David Landis.

Congratulations on your Foggies win! Tell us more about you/your team.

Why, thank you! Landis Communications Inc. (LCI) is so honored to win two inaugural Foggies Awards - for Small Agency of the Year and for Campaign of the Year. LCI is now celebrating 30 years and we represent some great brands: Velodyne Lidar, Sutter Health, Save the Redwoods League, Peninsula Open Space Trust, On Lok Senior Health and more. Here are some fun facts about some of our staff: David Landis began his career as a piano major – and now besides LCI, he moonlights as “The Gay Gourmet,” a food reviewer for the San Francisco Bay Times; Sean Dowdall grew up on an Indian reservation in Montana; besides being a sportsfan, Robin Carr also loves theatre and actually attended the Tony Awards; when she’s not doing PR, Polly Winograd Ikonen is a professional singer; Brianne Miller’s favorite LCI moment was shooting a PSA with Paula Abdul in LA; Betsy Levy ran a Wellness Center north of Calistoga; David Cumpston has travelled to 45 countries on 6 continents. Can you tell we have fun?!!

Tell us about your winning campaign/entry. How did it come about, what were the highlights, how much work went into it, results, etc.

Small agency of the year: I actually am not sure why. Maybe it was a mistake? But for Campaign of the Year, we had great fun working with our client Sutter Health to open their new CPMC hospital on Van Ness Avenue. A highlight of that campaign was crowning the first babies born at CPMC after the birth of the royal baby Harry: we parlayed that into national coverage, including Access Hollywood, Associated Press, Inside Edition, MSN.com and USA Today.

What does it mean to your team to take home this win? How will you celebrate?

Negronis all around! Seriously, this is a BIG win for us. We’ve won other awards – the Gold Quill from IABC, the Silver Anvil (PRSA National), Ragan’s – but honestly it does mean a lot more when it comes from the folks you know in your own home town. And, the San Francisco Bay Area has probably the most creative talent pool in the country, so that’s saying a lot.

What should the Bay Area know about you/your team?

We’re fiercely independent, so we don’t take on business we don’t want just for the money. But we are the San Francisco member of the Public Relations Global Network, so we have affiliates in 50 markets throughout the world (all independent agencies, just like us). We are also different from other PR firms in the Bay Area. Many of them have a tech focus and while we dabble in tech, we’re more of a consumer shop: everything from vacuum cleaners to environmental nonprofits to mortuaries to healthcare and real estate. We think that allows us to bring creative ideas across a multitude of industries – and we think it’s fun. There’s never a dull moment at LCI.

Anything else to share?

Come work for us! We’re hiring! We’ve got several positions open from Account Coordinator all the way up to Account Supervisor. If you’re interested, send a note to: jobs@landispr.com. Oh, and drop by to take a look at our art collection on Sutter Street, you’ll be wowed!
