Communications Manager at San Francisco AIDS Foundation

We're looking for another innovative and hard-working member of our communications team to manage internal communications and public relations. We’re looking for someone who takes initiative and direction, who is passionate about using communications to build community and who is committed to promoting health, wellness, and social justice for communities most impacted by HIV.
The Communications Manager is a member of our 7-person marketing & communications team which works to educate our audiences about our services, public health trends & harm reduction strategies, public policy, and philanthropic opportunities. The position reports directly to the Editor-In-Chief/Content Marketing Manager.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement programs to deepen engagement with employees so that staff are informed about agency activities, opportunities and impact. This position works to ensure that our teams experience a strong sense of community at SFAF.
- Develop an internal communications calendar and help ensure senior leaders buy in and adhere to agreed timelines and deliverables.
- Draft organizational updates for internal audiences, including leadership announcements, latest updates related to our strategic plan, organizational announcements, and employee/human interest stories.
- Coach managers and leaders in effective communication and consistent messages to key stakeholders and within their teams.
- Ensure messages populated in external communications channels also reach internal audiences. Handle the internal communication response to crisis situations which affect organizational perception and reputation.
- Assist with the organization and maintenance of our internal communications portal on the MS Teams platform.
- Build and implement a media affairs strategy that results in coverage that moves our strategic plan forward.
- Cultivate relationships with reporters and media outlets covering issues related to our work.
- Draft organizational statements and press releases in advance of and in response to news-related events.
- Field inbound media inquiries by connecting and preparing our experts to speak with reporters.
- Identify and pursue opportunities to establish thought-leadership and through op-eds, commentary and timely media outreach.
- Supports crisis communications plan as needed
- Train agency spokespeople and community member advocates to speak to the media.
- Maintain media contact lists and launch campaigns using media tools like Cision.
- Gather, curate, and create (as needed) social media content that intersects with our work, the interests of our followers, and our priority communities. Post content directly to SFAF social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn).
- Monitor channels and engage with audiences, making our social media presence more than a marketing channel.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Superb verbal and written communication skills, particularly strong at news writing, lifestyle and storytelling content.
- Strong copy editing and proofreading skills
- Deadline-driven communicator who has the ability to be creative, inquisitive and collaborative.
- Ability to craft change communications that support our values of justice, dignity, courage, leadership and excellence.
- Ability to create communications plans from scratch and a passion for implementing them.
- Knowledge of best-practices and current trends in nonprofit media relations and social media.
- Ability to find an opportunity for our message in almost every news event.
- Knowledge of city politics, public health, public affairs or the local media landscape.
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple competing tasks and demands.
- Flexibility to work some nights and weekends as needed. (See Work Environment below.)
- Desire to grow professionally and ability to hear and provide constructive feedback.
- Passionate interest in HIV prevention, public health practices, sexual health, substance use, and social justice movements, even in a volunteer capacity (understanding of basic issues is a requirement). Proven track record of working online to organize diverse supporters and constituencies, including communities of color and LGBTQ individuals is a plus.
- Proficiency with software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software (Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Office 365 programs such as Outlook; Google Office suite).

Skill in operating office equipment such as a personal computer, copy machine and telephone system. Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree preferred
- 3 - 5 years of work experience in communications, specifically corporate communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
- Experience creating internal communications programs and executing tactics that demonstrate improved employee engagement.
- Experience drafting press releases, pitching reporters, training spokespeople and placing op-eds, strongly preferred.
- Spanish language proficiency preferred.
- This position will have access to protected health information (PHI) and may only access, use or disclose the minimum information necessary to perform their designated role on behalf of San Francisco AIDS Foundation, regardless of the extent of access provided.
This position is primarily located at 1035 Market Street; San Francisco, however may require travel to other sites in San Francisco and the Bay Area as required by the job. The position may require irregular and extended hours, including nights, early mornings and weekends. This position may require participation in agency events as staff, which includes but is not limited to AIDS/LifeCycle, a 7-day traveling event that involves camping outdoors.
