For our latest Meet the Board, allow us to introduce our Director of Special Events, Angela Baldwin!
Tell us about yourself and your current role
In 2020, I quit my job and started Baldwin PR and Marketing. I currently work with nonprofit and tech clients. I started my career in tech, nonprofit, and consumer PR over ten years ago and I’ve handled media relations in English and Spanish, worked in-house and at agencies. I dabbled in social media management and strategy and celebrity and influence relations while living in LA. I’ve worked at three start-ups, worked as an event coordinator, marketing operations, and helped start a nonprofit called For The Boys in Kenya. I have lived many “work” lives, but PR has always had my heart.
How did you get into PR?
I knew I wanted to go into communications after I took a test in college that said I’d be good at it. Yes, it was that simple. But the more I learned about communications and PR, I learned that I would indeed be good at it because of my personality. My first PR internship was with World Vision U.S. while I was in college. I handled media relations around local fundraising events and disaster relief stories with English and Spanish media. Once I graduated college, I interned at The Horn Group, a tech PR agency in San Francisco.
What do you love about PR?
I love media relations and crisis communications. Since I started PR in disaster relief, I always loved telling positive stories and inspiring people to care for causes that were doing something special. Later in my career, I did PR for the Los Angeles Mission and continued my interest in telling real-life stories of rehabilitation and conquering addiction for PR and social media purposes.
Why are you in PRSA-SF? What do you feel the benefits have been for you?
I was born in San Francisco and returned in 2013. I was a part of PRSA in Los Angeles and wanted to meet other PR professionals in SF and participate in professional development events. I love learning and networking and PRSA created a space for that.
What are you hoping to accomplish during your year as director of special events with PRSA-SF?
I’d love to bring people together, virtually. COVID took away our in-person events but there is an opportunity here to provide a forum and space for us to build community among our peers.
What's one piece of advice you wish you would have known when you started out in PR?
I wish someone would have told me to practice my writing and jot down and save your media contacts throughout your career. They become your bread and butter. Also, watch The Crown. Lots of PR lessons. ; )
What are some of your hobbies? What do you do for fun?
I love the outdoors, reading, and running. I’m also really into audible books as well as podcasts and the occasional Netflix Show. I’m currently listening to “The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry” by Mark Comer and reading Radical Candor by Kim Scott. My next outdoor adventure is Bryce Canyon in the winter!
